After having the chance to watch the entire broadcast from Cuba, I believe they tried to do too much in such little time. With a little over 1 hour of true Cuban content, we were left wanting more. I sure hope that they are taping other segments for other shows while they were there, if not, the trip and all that effort were in vain. Afterall, it takes months and even years to get that kind of access approved by the government.
I believe that although NBC played the role of unbiased media outlet, that the coverage was very vanilla and really didn’t get at anything important. I believe the reporting was a 30,000 mile perspective of what life in Cuba is about. It did not deal with anything difficult…or easy for that matter.
On the bright side, I believe they did a very good job demonstrating the immense artistic offerings on the island. They had a music group play live music as well as having someone from the national ballet company speak. It was refreshing to see these wonderful creative expressions when it is usually the last thing we hear about when it comes to the island. I believe that the arts have been the biggest to suffer as they have gone largely unexplored by the validating eyes of humanity. In fact, the even visited the roots of the Buena Vista Social Club.
Overall…I give the effort a C+. The questions they took on-air were really corny which would have left additional airtime for more interesting topics.
Check out what the blog world thinks about the broadcast.

If you watched the entire broadcast, you might agree with me about the pathetic part where Lauer hands out Yankee and Red Sox baseball hats to “test” which team is more popular among Cubans.. Oh dear!
Oh, it was so awkward cause Matt wanted the “crowd” to sort of “fight” for the hats and no one was reaching for them. Oh dear is right!!
I completely agree with you that the coverage was overall very vanilla; however, I must disagree with the grade you gave the effort. I would give it a D+. The entire segmant on the Arts yes was insightful, an aspect of Cuba not really discussed but just not enough for the opportunity they were given to really report on Cuba from Cuba. The rest of the country doesn’t know about Cuba and really doesn’t care and after this broadcast that remainds the same because most people didn’t learn anything knew. NBC had a real opportunity to discuss the issues in and out of Cuba and they missed it. They could have focused on one aspect and truley taught the American people something about Cuba but they didn’t. They just quickly brushed over the overall basic things people know but that’s it. Yes, they interviewed some people in Miami’s exhile community but who didn’t know there was a bunch of pissed off Cubans in Miami willing to talk bad about Cuba. Again they had a great opportunity and didn’t take advantage of it.
I as well would have hoped that they filmed some other footage with more in depth coverage for maybe NBC Nightly News, Dateline or one of the MSNBC shows; however, I’m sure they passed on that opportunity also. I have not seen any ads on TV or on the NBC site promoting any other segmants on Cuba. I think it was another overall failed attempt by the US media to shed light on the Cuba situation. We shouldn’t be surprised it’s a recurring disappointment.
